If you need your wedding ring resized, take heart. Professional jewelers have many options at their disposal to get the job done safely and inexpensively.
Resizing Limitations
Before you resize, be aware of these limitations. Jewelers can only resize a ring to a maximum of two sizes up or down. Also, not all ring types are good candidates for permanent resizing methods requiring heat. Doing so would damage or destroy the following:
- Titanium rings
- Tungsten rings
- Stainless Steel rings
- Rose Gold rings
- Wooden rings
- Eternity rings
- Ornate rings with designs spanning the full circumference
Methods for Resizing Up
1. Stretching
Your jeweler heats the ring to soften its metal, then expertly expands the circumference. This method can safely enlarge rings by half a ring size.
2. Cut and Spread
The jeweler skillfully cuts the ring’s bottom and adds metal into the shank to spread the ring to the precise size. After soldering and polishing, no visual signs of the procedure remain.
Methods for Resizing Down
1. Sizing Beads
Your jeweler attaches a pair of beads onto the inner side of the ring. Beading closes the gap between the ring and the finger. This is a good option for large knuckles.
2. Spring Insert
This method involves placing a horseshoe-shaped, tensioned metal strip on the inner surface of the ring. It closes gently on the inserted finger, keeping the ring in place comfortably.
3. Sizing Bar
The jeweler attaches a hinged u-shaped device to one side of the ring’s bottom and a hasp on the other. The wearer opens the bar, inserts a finger into the ring, and closes the bar securing it with the hasp.
4. Cut and Shrink
Your jeweler cuts a small section away from the bottom part of the ring, leaving a gap. Using heat, he softens the ring and brings the ends together. After soldering and polishing, no visual signs of this permanent procedure remain.

Hi. I have osteoarthritis which makes the knuckle on my ring finger too big to get my wedding ringnove. I don’t really want it made bigger because it will be very loose once over the knuckle and will look stupid. Any ideas?
Greetings. Sorry for your osteoarthritis. That must be painful and annoying. I suggest an adjustable shank for your ring. They can run anywhere between 400 to 800 and sometimes more. Do you have a local jeweler that you use?
I got a set of ring coils from Amazon. They wrap around the ring and you can cut to size. I have thin fingers but larger knuckles. It helps roll over the knuckles but stay secure on my finger.
. If you need your current ring enlarged to fit over your knuckle but then have the ability to remain in place and fitted, a reputable jeweler can either stretch your ring up to a half size larger, or if it needs a full size or more, they will cut and open the ring to accommodate extra material and then polish so you can’t see the repair. Then they will add two sizing beads that will be on the underside of the ring, so they can keep your ring snug and prevent it from turning around.
Can a men’s silver tungsten ring be realized? I have a ring size of 12.75 and can’t find anywhere that sells this size. Would it be better to get a 13 and size down or get a 12.5 and size up?
Size 13 is big but 12.5 is snug and with it being winter I was told my fingers are smaller than when in summer
How much would it cost to resize a wedding ring from a woman’s size 6 to 7.5
Prices can vary widely, plus cost is affected by type of metal your ring is (platinum, 14kgold, or sterling silver). I would only advise you hand over your ring only to a reputable jeweler, and an independent local jeweler, in my experience, can help you find a solution you can afford, and offer discounts or payment plans,(as the owner), that a salesperson at a chain store can’t. Prices can vary from $40 up to $600
