If you need your wedding ring resized, take heart. Professional jewelers have many options at their disposal to get the job done safely and inexpensively.

Resizing Limitations

Before you resize, be aware of these limitations. Jewelers can only resize a ring to a maximum of two sizes up or down. Also, not all ring types are good candidates for permanent resizing methods requiring heat. Doing so would damage or destroy the following:

  • Titanium rings
  • Tungsten rings
  • Stainless Steel rings
  • Rose Gold rings
  • Wooden rings
  • Eternity rings
  • Ornate rings with designs spanning the full circumference

Methods for Resizing Up

1. Stretching

Your jeweler heats the ring to soften its metal, then expertly expands the circumference. This method can safely enlarge rings by half a ring size.

2. Cut and Spread

The jeweler skillfully cuts the ring’s bottom and adds metal into the shank to spread the ring to the precise size. After soldering and polishing, no visual signs of the procedure remain.

Methods for Resizing Down

1. Sizing Beads

Your jeweler attaches a pair of beads onto the inner side of the ring. Beading closes the gap between the ring and the finger. This is a good option for large knuckles.

2. Spring Insert

This method involves placing a horseshoe-shaped, tensioned metal strip on the inner surface of the ring. It closes gently on the inserted finger, keeping the ring in place comfortably.

3. Sizing Bar

The jeweler attaches a hinged u-shaped device to one side of the ring’s bottom and a hasp on the other. The wearer opens the bar, inserts a finger into the ring, and closes the bar securing it with the hasp.

4. Cut and Shrink

Your jeweler cuts a small section away from the bottom part of the ring, leaving a gap. Using heat, he softens the ring and brings the ends together. After soldering and polishing, no visual signs of this permanent procedure remain.
